Biography

Started in 2001, The Non-Native Transplants (NNT) were a performance poetry troupe based out of Phoenix, AZ comprised of three members: Cage McAleister, Stephen G. Roy, and The Klute. The creation of the group was inspired by another Phoenix-area performance troupe, The New Subterreaneans and the thematic similarity of many of the NNT members' works (which tended to be "darker" works inspired by literary greats such as H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allan Poe).

The name "Non-Native Transplants" refers to each member's home being a place other than Arizona (Cage McAleister - Caspar, WY; Stephen G. Roy - Sacramento, CA; The Klute - West Palm Beach, FL).

In 2002, Cage McAleister headed up the creation of "The Poe Show", an annual show celebrating the birth of Edgar Allan Poe, the only such show west of the Mississippi. NNT also performed their only out-of-Arizona show, headlining the now defunct uniVerse/Hot Air at the Cuillo Centre for the Arts in West Palm Beach, FL.

NNT never officially disbanded, but Cage McAleister stopped performing poetry locally to focus on his sculpture, and The Klute began to focus more on individual competition.

Each member was recognized by a sigil in promotional literature. Cage McAleister was a chain in the shape of a spiral; Stephen G. Roy, the silhouette of a spider; and The Klute, the voodoo symbol for artistry.
