Biography

Andrew Berger began performing poetry in West Hollywood, CA prior to 1994. In 1994, he moved to Mesa, AZ, gaining employment at Essenza Coffeehouse. There, in the fall of 1994, Andrew was instrumental in supporting the creation of the Essenzaslam Poetry Slam. In 1996, Andrew won a spot on the Mesa national Poetry Slam Team, and travelled to Portland, OR. for the National Poetry Slam. Andrews performance of his signature poem Funky Clown Town was captured by Filmmaker Paul Devlin, a snippet of which was included in the Slam Nation movie. The snippet earned Andrew a sort of underground fame, although the poem was not received well by judges. Later, Andrew also became involved in organizing performance poetry at Congo, a coffee bar located in South Scottsdale.
