Biography
Performance Poet, Akua represented the Mesa National Slam Team at the 2004 National Poetry Slam in St. Louis, Mo. The year prior, 2003, she had been a favorite to make the Mesa National Slam Team, but illness drained her energy and voice. Nonetheless, she still turned in excellent performances in that slamoff. Following that year, Akua moved to New York, NY seeking expanded opportunity for her performance poetry. In 2005, she would be a member of one of the Urbana National Slam Team in 2005 (and 2006). In 2005, Team Urbana met Team Mesa in the Semi-finals of the National Poetry Slam, but unfortunatley Akua did not perform in the bout.
Poetry
During her time in Arizona, a strong examination of sexuality and relationships dominated Akua's work, though such pieces as Titties, Ass and Hips. Over time, her attention turned to race, with pieces such My Skin examining herself and her proclamation of identity. Always with a keen eye, Akua provides powerful insights into behaviors of others, with pieces like First a scything examination of the predisposition within the performance poetry community that performing first is a disadvantage, and how people treat each other in relation to that predisposition.
